Frank Fish Lecture “Are Herbal Medicines just Placebos?”

On 21.02.24 there will be a half-day afternoon symposium and eponymous lecture in London and online. You are cordially invited to join online or in person for this year’s Frank Fish Memorial Lecture and afternoon symposium co-badged by the APSGB and GA:

Dr. Merlin Willcox (Southhampton):‘Are herbal medicines just Placebos? Or could they help to overcome the UK’s major health challenges?’

Venue: John Hanbury Lecture Theatre, UCL School of Pharmacy, 29 – 39 Brunswick Sq., London WC1N 1AX, UK. Online participation will be possible.

Register here for the Frank Fish Memorial Lecture Online.

This is a free event.

Dr. Willcox’s presentation

In his presentation, Dr Willcox will reflect on his experiences in research and practice on herbal medicines. Are they just placebos? A core challenge today is antibiotic resistance. Can herbal medicines help in reducing the risk of resistance spreading further and what is needed to achieve this? Similarly, can herbal medicines help in the prevention or treatment of chronic life-style related diseases? What roles should medical doctors, pharmacists and nurses play? More general, this presentation will focus on the potential of herbal medicines and on the bottlenecks for a more systematic use of these complex mixtures.

Herbal medicines continue to be widely used by many from the seriously ill to the ‘’worried well’’ and it is therefore essential that these products, like all medicines, are a focus of research within the UK and that health care professionals can provide informed evidence-based advice on their use.

Short CV: Dr Willcox is both a clinical lecturer at the University of Southampton and a practicing GP. Since 2003 he has worked as a GP in the NHS and currently works in a practice in Oxford as well as in the Out of Hours service. He is particularly well known for research on traditional (esp. herbal) medicines in Africa focussing on clinical developments of antimalarial agents derived from plants, and for his research on diverse aspects of herbal medicines and their efficacy in the UK. His research interests include global health, clinical trials of herbal medicines, and improving care for vulnerable people.

Regulation of Natural Products – a Global Challenge

Preclinical and clinical development of HMPs
December 1, 2023, 3.00 PM – 5.30 PM (CET), online

For many natural products, there is a tradition of clinical use in humans. Still there is a desire for data on the mode of action or preclinical safety data generated in animals. This is even more the case when natural product are not based on tradition, but newly developed from scratch. In both cases, the transfer of animal data to the clinical situation can be a challenge, given e.g. physiological and dosing differences and different regulatory frameworks. In this issue of the GA eSeminars on December 1, this question is addressed by three renowned lecturers from different fields:

  • Dr. Orlando Petrini, Institute of Microbiology, University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland, Switzerland
  • Dr. Cynthia Rider, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), USA
  • Dr. Jacqueline Wiesner, Bundesinstitut für Arzneimittel und Medizinprodukte (BfArM), Germany

With the GA eSeminar series on the regulation of natural products as a global challenge, GA, the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research, is addressing the multitude of regulatory categories and different approaches in the field globally. These comprise e.g. (traditional) herbal medicinal products, herbal food supplements (so called botanicals), and substance-based medical devices, with leading experts from industry, authorities and academia worldwide presenting lectures. The aim is to help in differentiating the different market niches for herbal products in the countries of this world and to reveal pros and cons of the categories. Starting in autumn 2021, the parts A – C of this eSeminar series gave an overview of the regulation of mainly supply and quality of the products from different regulatory pathways in different geographies worldwide. Part D, which is starting with this issue, is widening the scope towards more basic questions.

Medicinal plants and industry: An African bench to shelf perspective

GA/APSS/ISE e-Seminar

November 17, 2023, 2.00 PM (CET), online

In a collaborative venture with the newly-formed African Phytomedicine Scientific Society (APSS), the GA, the Society for Medicinal Plants and Natural Product research aims to enhance the distribution of knowledge and the advancement of phytomedicine both locally and abroad. Although focussed on academia, the African Phytomedicine Scientific Society encourages the participation of all role-players in the natural products chain. From the initial ethnobotanical selection of medicinal plants by Traditional Health Practitioners to the final stage of pharmaceutical development by industry representatives, APSS encompasses a multi-disciplinary effort to provide, to connect and to promote phytomedicinal research and development in Africa. In this e-seminar, an African perspective of the role of medicinal plant industry representatives in the commercialisation of natural products and the completion of years of research, is explored. Three speakers from South Africa have been selected to deliver a developing world approach to the promotion of medicinal plant science and the challenges and opportunities facing those who are interested in exploring the realm of natural product commercialisation. We believe that this e-seminar will be a fruitful experience to all involved and will hopefully plant the seed for networking opportunities and future collaborative endeavours.

Natural products research in the digital era: Methods for compound annotation and the present status of metabolome characterization

Location: Online

Date: May 23 and 30, June 6 2023; 5.00 p.m. – 7 p.m. (CEST)

General Information

Natural products (NPs) from plants and micro-organisms are a source of inspiration in drug discovery. They all have their own physical and chemical characteristics and different levels of concentration in extract which makes their comprehensive analysis very challenging. Isolation and complete de novo structural characterization of each compound is necessary for unambiguous identification, but this is a difficult and time-consuming task. In this context, metabolomics is playing an increasingly important role for annotating detected compounds to assess the chemical composition of extracts and dereplication of given metabolites to focus on the discovery of new NPs. Today, with the emergence of advanced liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolite profiling methods, the process of annotating compounds in extracts has been automated and simplified. In this way up to hundreds NPs can be putatively annotated in each extract. Assessing the confidence of annotation however remains a challenge in metabolomics. The proposed online workshop covers the fundamentals of data mining, metabolite profiling and compound annotation using various computational tools. The possibilities and limitations of current metabolomic workflows and computational tools will be discussed. Additionally, we will discuss the exciting possibilities that these advancements offer and show examples of how we’ve utilized them in our own research to automate annotation and efficiently target the isolation of valuable NPs.

Advances in Pharmacovigilance for Herbal Medicines

Location: Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London

Date: 12th – 14th April, 2023

The use of herbal and traditional medicines for health and well-being, as well as for prevention and treatment of disease, remains a popular choice globally. While herbal and traditional medicines may bring health benefits, as with other medicinal products, there are also associated risks, including a lack of clinical pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data to determine dosages, dose-response relationships and other parameters, as well as poor-quality products. Developments in regulation for herbal and traditional medicines have strengthened pharmacovigilance for these products, but there are challenges in identifying, assessing, monitoring and managing safety concerns.

eSymposium: Phytotherapeutics in Children

Rationalizing optimal Dosing for use in Children:
Current Situation – Potential Solutions – Activities needed
Science for Children at the border between paediatrics, regulatory affairs, toxicology and epidemiology

“Children are no small adults with respect to the treatment with medicinal products” – as stated by WHO. This understanding has been the basis for the initiative of the European Commission to build the Paediatric Committee (PDCO) as scientific board in the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

A Paediatric Regulation came into force in the European Union (EU) on 26 January 2007. Its objective was and still is to improve the health of children in Europe by facilitating the development and availability of medicines for children aged 0 to 17 years. 15 years later we have to realize, that the results are moderate.

This eSymposium will give opportunity to analyse the reasons and to present prospects for alternatives to establish proof of safe and efficacious herbal medicines for children’s use. The eSymposium should be the starting point to discuss actions to be initiated as soon as possible to find suitable ways for establishing rationalized dosage regimes for phytotherapeutics for the use in children.

This eSymposium is a joint initiative of the Society of Medicinal Plants and Natural Products Research (GA), the Gesellschaft für Phytotherapie (GPT) and the Foundation Plants for Health (PfH) with the aim facilitating research in this neglected area of healthcare, including future funding opportunities of research for phytotherapeutics in children.
